Non-contact Labyrinth Seals
Non-contact labyrinth seals protect the ends of high-speed rotating shafts. Multi-stage clearances create a tortuous path that blocks dust, chips, oil mist, coolant splash and washdown-water spray. Because the design does not use a conventional sealing lip pressed against the shaft, it is suitable for low-friction, low-heat, long-cycle operation and bearing-contamination control.
Primary Uses of Non-contact Labyrinth Seals
High-speed shaft-end protection: Used at the bearing ends of machine-tool spindles, high-speed motors, fans, pumps and compressors to reduce contaminant ingress into lubrication and bearing areas.
Low friction and low heat: The seal does not contact the shaft surface during normal operation, reducing the heat, wear and shaft-groove risks associated with conventional contact oil seals at high speed.
External protection and combined sealing: Can be used independently against dust, oil mist and splash, or combined with a PTFE stainless steel oil seal where the equipment requires higher sealing performance.
Information Required for Selection
Installation dimensions: Shaft diameter, housing diameter, available width, end-cover geometry, axial retention method and available installation space.
Operating conditions: Maximum and normal speed, temperature, shaft runout, concentricity, dynamic balance and any significant axial thermal expansion.
Contaminants and exposure: Dust, chips, oil mist, coolant splash, washdown spray, pressure, liquid level or immersion conditions.
